With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Turdell La’Mont Hopkins-Bey-Jones, a devoted son, grandson, father, brother, cousin, and friend, who left an unforgettable mark on all whose lives he touched. Born on October 19, 1990, in Chicago, IL, and departing this world on January 8, 2025, Turdell’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.
Turdell was a man of many talents. From a young age, he showcased ambition and determination, never letting obstacles deter him. As an honor student, he excelled academically and carried that same drive into his entrepreneurial ventures. Drawing inspiration from his grandfather Maurice Hopkins-Bey, he co-founded H&B Decorating & Construction, a business built on their shared passion for craftsmanship and home remodeling. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Turdell believed that success didn’t require college but rather intelligence, hard work, and dedication—values he embodied throughout his life. As Albert Einstein once said, “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” Turdell lived this quote, valuing his character, his family, and his ability to help others above all else. His goal was to build generational wealth, creating opportunities not just for himself but for those he loved.
As an All-American athlete, Turdell’s prowess on the baseball field earned him recognition from scouts and colleges nationwide. His love for outdoor sports extended to skiing, football, and basketball, where his competitive nature thrived. Turdell shared a special bond with his father, Dewayne Jones, through their mutual passion for sports and racing cars. Whether cheering together at games or working on cars, these moments created lasting memories filled with love and camaraderie.
Beyond sports, Turdell had a sharp mind and loved engaging in deep conversations about politics, government, and thought-provoking subjects. He was a man who always sought knowledge and embraced new experiences.
Known for his warm smile and adventurous spirit, Turdell had a natural ability to bring joy wherever he went. He was a jokester who could turn the darkest moments into laughter, leaving those around him with a sense of hope and happiness. His loyalty and love for family were unmatched. He was a supportive son and grandson to his mother Tawana Hopkins-Bey-Jones and grandmother Sandra Hopkins-Bey, a protective and loving cousin but more of a brother to Ashley Hopkins-Bey-Turner, and a dedicated father to his cherished children, Ka’Derris and Aaliyah. Turdell’s role as the family’s bridge and strength will forever be remembered.
Turdell also leaves behind his love, Tawaii, whom he affectionately called his “ladybug.” Together, they dreamed of building a future filled with love, partnership, and shared goals. Tawaii was his confidante, his support, and his inspiration as they looked forward to a life of joy and accomplishment.
Turdell is survived by his grandmothers Sandra Hopkins-Bey and Shirley Jones, his mother Tawana Hopkins-Bey-Jones, his father Dewayne Jones, his children Ka’Derris and Aaliyah, his aunt Rougette Tillman, his cousin who is more like his sister Ashley Hopkins-Bey-Turner, and countless family members and friends who loved him deeply. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Dwight Fields, Uncle Richard Bridges, Grandmother’s Eleanor Danielsand Mary Watkins, who’s legacies Turdell carried forward with honor.
Let us come together to celebrate the life of Turdell La’Mont Hopkins-Bey, a man who inspired, loved, and gave so generously to us all. Though he is no longer with us, his light will continue to shine in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
