Matthew Payton Obituary

With hearts full of gratitude for a life well-lived, we celebrate the legacy of Matthew Payton, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and cherished friend. Born on March 9, 1938, in Tylertown, Mississippi, Matthew was the sixth child of Curtis and Rosa Payton. From an early age, he exhibited a strong work ethic, a generous spirit, and an unwavering commitment to family-values that would define his journey through life.

Matthew attended Magee's Creek School and, after graduation, set out to build a future filled with promise. In 1960, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he established himself as a highly skilled Body & Fender Technician. His craftsmanship and dedication earned him the respect of his colleagues, and he became a trusted name in his profession.

But Matthew's greatest blessing was the love story he shared with his high school sweetheart, Rosie Mae Downs. On October 1, 1961, they were joined in holy matrimony at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of Bishop H.W. Goldsberry. Their union was a testament to love, faith, and partnership, and together they built a beautiful life, welcoming two beloved children, Trina and Matthew.

For many years, Matthew was a cornerstone at Napleton Cadillac, where he worked diligently until his well-earned retirement at the age of 62. After decades of hard work, he embraced 24 years of retirement, filling his days with the simple joys of life-cherishing family gatherings, sharing laughter with friends, and offering wisdom and encouragement to those around him. His presence brought warmth to every room, and his stories, advice, and kindness left a lasting impact on everyone he met.

Matthew was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Rosa Payton, and five siblings. Though he has departed this earthly life, his legacy of love and devotion continues through those who knew and adored him.

He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 63 years, Ros-ie; his children Trina (Jerry) Conerly of Austin, TX, Matthew (Erica) Payton of Matteson, IL, Lee Brown, and Tarina Brown of Chicago, IL; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who will forever hold his memory in their hearts. He also leaves behind three cherished sisters-in-law-Ruby Dillion of Chicago, IL, Katie Forrest of Vallejo, CA, and Lula Caverl of Matteson, IL-and one caring brother-in-law, Willie (Juanita) Downs of Chicago, IL

His life was rich with love, laughter, and faith, and he touched countless lives along the way. As we say farewell, we do so with deep sorrow but also with immense gratitude for the gift of his presence, the strength of his example, and the love he poured into each of us.

Though Matthew's journey on earth has ended, his spirit remains woven into the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace, Matthew. Your legacy of love lives on.
