James Demetrius Staples, lovingly known as LJ or “Little James,” was born on April 5, 2020, at 12:25 a.m. at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois. On January 14, 2026, LJ was called home to be with the Lord, leaving behind a legacy of joy, love, and light far greater than his years.
From the moment he entered the world, LJ was a radiant presence. He was funny, bubbly, loving, joyful, and kind—an innocent soul with a contagious smile that could brighten even the darkest days. Wherever LJ went, he lit up the room. His laughter, playful spirit, and gentle nature brought people together and made everyone feel welcome just by being near him.
LJ delighted in the simple joys of childhood. He loved trips to the park, playing on jungle gyms, painting and drawing, and spending time with his cousins and family. He enjoyed family adventures to places like Universal Studios, waterparks, Chuck E. Cheese, the zoo, and movie theaters. He especially loved watching his favorite shows and characters, including Paw Patrol, Bluey, PJ Masks, Ninja Turtles, Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes, Spider-Man, Batman, and Spidey and His Amazing Friends. Dinosaurs—especially the T-Rex—were a favorite topic of conversation.
Naturally athletic, LJ enjoyed soccer and video games, particularly racing games. He also found joy in playhouses at McDonald’s and Chick-fil-A, and he never passed up his favorite meals—, French fries, noodles, Happy Meals, and Chick-fil-A nuggets. One of his many endearing quirks was announcing, with certainty, “I don’t like sour,” even when something wasn’t sour at all.
LJ expressed love freely through warm hugs, sweet kisses on his own terms, and his bright, ever-present smile. He was a cherished son, a proud big brother to Jrue Staples, and a beloved cousin and friend. He shared special bonds with many family members, including cherished time spent with his Nanas, GPa’s and TT’s Kiara, and Tiondra—shopping, sharing special moments, enjoying movie dates, and creating priceless memories filled with laughter and love.
In late March 2025, LJ’s journey took an unexpected turn when concerns about his eyesight led to urgent medical care. On his golden birthday, April 5, 2025, he bravely underwent testing while surrounded by love. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with DIPG/DMG. LJ faced this journey with extraordinary courage and resilience, continuing to smile, laugh, and live fully. Though his physical challenges grew, his spirit never wavered. Anchored in faith, hope, and the love of his family, LJ’s life became a powerful testimony of perseverance and grace, shining a light on the urgent need for awareness and a cure.
LJ was raised to lean on God and to walk through life with faith, love, and confidence. He was taught to observe the world around him, to trust, and to remain joyful. Night after night, words of love, faith, and protection were spoken over him, surrounding him with peace. His life—though brief—was full, meaningful, and deeply impactful.
LJ leaves to cherish his memory his loving parents Javier, and Jaimee; his brother, Jrue Staples; grandparents James Palmer, Arhonda Palmer, Erica Walls-Staples, Willie Walls, Demetrius Staples, and Nicole Staples; great-grandmother Shirley Jean Walker Staples; godparents Antonelle McBride and Matthew Stallworth; aunts Tiondra Purnell, Taylore McDaniel, and Talhlia McDaniel, Kiara Staples, uncles Jarvis Purnell, and Eric Williams, extended family, and many beloved cousins, including his favorite cousins Jayce, Zayah, Jaylah, Skylar, Ayden, and Joie, along with countless others whose lives were forever touched by his light.
Above all, LJ will be remembered as a precious gift from God—proof that even the smallest life can leave the biggest imprint. His smile, laughter, faith, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
